THE FIRM
How Khunacad came to work the way it does.
Khunacad was formed in Kuala Lumpur in 2011 by two partners who had each spent the previous decade in advisory and governance work — one primarily in the commercial sector, the other in the longer-tenure questions of family enterprise and institutional stewardship. They found, independently and then together, that the most useful counsel they had offered was nearly always delivered in writing: a letter sent ahead of a board meeting, a note exchanged after a difficult decision, a long correspondence that helped a chief executive think through a transition that had no clear precedent.
The practice was built around that observation. Rather than constructing a firm modelled on the conventional consulting engagement — the kickoff, the framework, the deliverable — the partners chose to work within the form of written exchange. The margin, where readers leave their own marks, became the organising image: not a correction, not a verdict, but a considered second reading placed alongside the first.
Over the years, the firm's work has reached clients in the financial sector, in manufacturing and distribution, in education, and in the governance of family-held assets. The common thread is not an industry but a disposition — a willingness to think in writing, to read carefully, and to accept that the most important questions rarely resolve quickly.
Khunacad remains a small practice. The partners see a limited number of clients at any one time, and they conduct the work themselves. That is not a constraint the firm seeks to remove.

THE PARTNERS
The people who read
and write on your behalf.
The work is conducted by the partners. There is no junior delegation.
Adrian Korr
SENIOR PARTNER
Adrian spent eleven years in commercial advisory before joining the firm at its founding. His work centres on the Year of Notes engagement and on clients who are navigating significant leadership transitions. He holds an LLM from Universiti Malaya and reads widely in the literature of organisations.
Mei-Ling Plume
SENIOR PARTNER
Mei-Ling's background is in family enterprise governance and long-tenure stewardship. She leads the Stewardship Engagement practice and has worked alongside owners and trustees across Malaysia and the wider region. She brings to the work a particular attentiveness to questions of succession and meaning.
Rajan Lim
ASSOCIATE PARTNER
Rajan joined the firm in 2018. He carries the Marginal Reading practice and supports both senior partners in extended engagements. His background is in strategy and written communication, and he approaches the reading of client materials with a close attention to what the text is doing as well as what it says.
HOW WE WORK
Standards the firm holds
in all its engagements.
These are not policies posted for compliance. They are the conditions under which the work is possible at all.
Strict Confidentiality
All correspondence, all materials, and all engagement details remain entirely private. We do not reference clients in any public context without explicit written consent.
No Conflicts of Interest
Before accepting an engagement, we review for any relationship that could impair independent judgment. We decline work where a conflict exists or is likely to arise.
Honest Assessment
We write what we observe, including observations the client may not welcome. Agreeable annotations are not the same as useful ones, and we hold the distinction carefully.
Data Protection
Client materials and personal data are handled in accordance with Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010. Digital correspondence is stored securely and not retained beyond the engagement period without consent.
Realistic Timelines
We do not accept more engagements than we can serve with care. When a partner is not available to take on new work, we say so at the point of enquiry rather than after the fact.
Clear Engagement Terms
Each engagement is confirmed in a brief letter setting out scope, fees, and the conditions under which either party may conclude the work. No engagement begins without that letter exchanged.
ON THE NATURE OF THIS WORK
Business consulting as a reading practice.
Senior leaders and stewards of enterprises face questions that do not fit neatly into the vocabulary of performance metrics or strategic frameworks. Questions about what the organisation is actually for, about what kind of person the leader wants to remain through a difficult period, about what should be preserved when much else changes — these questions are real and they matter to outcomes, but they rarely surface in the spaces that conventional consulting creates.
The written exchange creates a different space. A note sent at the leader's initiative, read carefully by a partner, and answered in a considered reply — this exchange operates at the pace of thought rather than the pace of the calendar. It accommodates uncertainty. It allows for revision. It leaves a record that the leader can return to.
Khunacad's practice in Malaysia draws on the traditions of management consulting but is informed also by the practices of editorial correspondence, of governance advising in the Commonwealth tradition, and of the quieter forms of counsel that have supported leaders in complex family and institutional settings. The firm does not claim a proprietary methodology. It claims only attentiveness and time.
The engagements described on this site — Marginal Reading, Year of Notes, and Stewardship Engagement — are the three forms in which the firm's work currently reaches clients. Each has been developed through practice, and each reflects what the partners found to be genuinely useful rather than what a market survey suggested was wanted.
The practice works within a small set of forms. Requests for services outside those forms are considered individually and are sometimes declined.
Clients in Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong are served regularly. Engagements with clients elsewhere are possible and have occurred.
